1863. January 10th the inauguration of the first subway system in the world

The first underground railway line, began its construction in 1854 by the Metropolitan Railway which was to unite the city of London with the railway terminal of the urban center. Financial problems delayed the works.

The world’s first underground railway opened in January 1863 between Paddington and Farringdon using gas-lit wooden carriages hauled by steam locomotives. It was hailed as a success, carrying 38,000 passengers on the opening day, and borrowing trains from other railways to supplement the service.
